FAO Schwarz is a large specialty toy store located near Central Park and the Plaza Hotel in New York. More often than not, the two-storey toy store is packed with kids, this being a primary tourist destination for the young and old alike.
FAO Schwarz is known for several movie appearances, most famously in “Big” starring Tom Hanks. The movie features a larger-than-life piano—a similar type is still frequently available in the store, usually located on the second floor.
The exterior of the store features a seating area and a fountain. This is an excellent resting area if your feet are tired after shopping on 5th Avenue.
FAO Schwarz is most famously known for its stuffed animals. Some children are intimidated, amazed or even scared at the large scale of some of the stuffed animals available for purchase on the first floor. Due to the larger-than-life nature of FAO Schwarz, you should always accompany children in the store.
Aside from its prime retail location, the store’s success is due partially to the interactive nature of the store’s environment. When you enter the store, you’ll hear a song. Employees occasionally interact with children while in character and most toys are within the reach of children.
There are several interactive toys and store features, all designed with toys and children in mind. The largest of these is a functioning elevator, the façade of which resembles a robot.
FAO Schwarz sells pricey and high-quality toys, most notably furry and realistic-looking stuffed animals by Gund and other reputable brands. On the second floor, you’ll also find special editions of popular games such as Monopoly.
You can also visit various sections of the store. While these rotate, they frequently include LegoLand, Puppet Park and a stuffed animal and conservation section supported by the American Museum of Natural History.
The general spectacle of FAO Schwarz is enjoyable for tourists and consumers of all ages. To truly experience the wonder of the store, avoid the crowds and enter just after the store opens (on a weekday if possible). If the store gets too crowded, you can ignore the robot elevator and use either of the store’s escalators to head up to the second floor.
If coming to the store with children, it’s best to discuss budget prior to visiting. The store is a visually-appealing and overwhelming experience for kids (as intended). Also, don’t forget to bring a dose of patience—a full walk-through can take a few hours.
