Mangia: Eat early, eat often!

May 7, 2010

If you find yourself in the middle of midtown and you want a healthy yet quick lunch, then Mangia is your place.

You can basically get any kind of food you want but get ready to pay for it. The salad bar ($9.95 lb), while expensive, offers lots of options including several types of salads, vegetables, hummus, sweet potatoes and seafood.

If you’re really in a hurry, just go to the sandwich counter and buy a panini. A personal favorite is the sole panini ($4.95) made with fresh mozzarella, sun-dried tomatoes and basil on pizza bianca. Other options include ham & brie, salami with mozzarella, roasted red peppers and French ham with aged cheddar on grilled country bread.

If you don't like any of the premade ones, you can also create your own dagwood. Maybe a hot meal is more what you’re looking for. Every day the selections change. Some specials include: linguine pasta - with smoked salmon, dill, leeks, white wine and cream, grilled salmon with caper dill aioli, and grilled shell steak with pizzaiola sauce. Mangia also has some deals.

A recent lunch special was an individual pizza plus bottled water for $4.95. The dinner special was a choice of entree, with soup or salad, dessert or fruit salad and soda or water for $19.95. There are lots of drinks to pick from including flavored iced teas, Perrier, sodas. There’s also a full service juice bar.

Please save room for Mangia’s homemade desserts. Your mouth will be watering when you see the many options. A favorite is the delicious strawberry shortcake ($4.95 a piece), made with vanilla sponge cake, sliced strawberries and fresh whipped cream. Other cakes include tiramisu, carrot, white chocolate passion fruit and mocha rum.

If you really fall in love with the cakes, you can purchase the whole cake to take home. For those on a budget, there are dessert specials that cost $2.75 or less. If you want a sit-down lunch, you can sit upstairs where there is a full service restaurant.

There are four Mangia locations: 57th Street, 48th Street, 23rd Street and Wall Street.
