Osteria Serafina

May 2, 2010

Osteria Serafina, a small cozy restaurant, is perfect if you find yourself on Madison Avenue on a Friday night without a reservation, but I wouldn't make it a destination spot.

Also don't get confused. This is a sister restaurant of the Serafina on 61st street. The other location is more of a scene if that’s what you’re looking for.  Go to this location if you’re seeking a quiet dinner with date or if you’re eating by yourself.

It's quite expensive for what you're getting. The fish tasted like it might have been frozen. Roasted potatoes weren't even on the menu.

The restaurant is very casual, even though the prices aren't. It also didn't have French fries that are served at the other location.

Some of the antipasta selections include feta unta--bruschetta, garlic and tomatoes ($6.50), Italian smoked tuna on a bed of arugula & thinly sliced artichokes ($15). The primi piatti dishes include: tagliolini aglio made with tomatoes, olive oil, garlic and crushed hot red peppers  ($13.50) and penne all'arrabbiata made with fresh tomatoes, peppers, pecorino cheese, parsley & a touch of garlic ($12.50).

Also if it's fish you're seeking, don't expect a lot of variety. The only two fish selections on the menu are swordfish and branzini. Both were pricey at $25.

Desserts are limited and pricey. The apple cake, which was just ordinary, was $14.95.

Also, you won’t be getting martinis here, they only serve wine and beer and keep in mind they only accept American Express.
