Thai Basil: A tasty escape from Hell's Kitchen

May 11, 2010

If you're seeking a small cozy Thai restaurant on 9th avenue, try Thai Basil.

The restaurant is small so don't come at peak times if you don't want to wait. The tables are also right next to each other, so it's not recommended if you really want privacy.

There’s lots of small dishes to pick from. Try a variety of appetizers including grilled squid, shrimp roll, mee grob (crispy noodle, bean curd and shrimp tossed in a sweet tamarind sauce), crab roll or fried tofu, served with sweet chili sauce & crushed peanut.

If you're seeking a light salad, try the Thai salad, made with fresh lettuce, tomato, carrot, cucumber, with peanut dressing or the papaya salad, made with green papaya, carrot, string bean, tomato, peanut & lime juice. If you want a more filling salad, try the beef salad made with grilled sliced beef, tomato, cucumber, red onion, & fresh chili tossed in a spicy lime dressing or the ground pork salad made with pork, onion, scallion, ginger in a chili lime vinaigrette.

Soups include: wonton made with marinated ground pork and the traditional Tom Yum made with chu chee curry in coconut milk with your choice of chicken, shrimp or vegetable.

Lunch specials includes Thai Basil (fresh basil leave, onion bell pepper), fresh ginger (fresh ginger, scallion, onion, mushroom, and bell pepper), Rama Rong Song (peanut sauce, broccoli, carrot and string bean).  Choose from vegetable, vegetarian duck, chicken/pork/beef or shrimp. They come with a salad, a vegetable spring roll and jasmine rice. Noodle dishes don't come with additional rice.

If you're seeking a spicy lunch dish try the massaman curry made with massaman curry paste with coconut milk, potato, onion & cashew nut or the yellow curry made with coconut milk potato, onion,  green peas & carrot. They are only served on Monday to Friday, from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and substitutions are additional.

Specialties include the Nuur Yang made with BBQ marinated beef with Thai herbs served with a spicy chili sauce, and the Shrimp Tamarind made with jumbo shrimp dipped in hot oil and then topped with tamarind sauce.

Desserts include fried bananas, ice cream, and sticky rice with mango.
