Nick Kaftan's Bio

From the heart of the artist:  The pursuit to give life to my experiences by the interpretation of my visions through “art” has been a lifelong quest for me.  So much so, that I have dared not alter that mission by aligning my product to a given market...not relying on my expressions to sustain me...in short, to keep this important part of who I am free and clear to be whatever it has to be.  I propose no style, I espouse no school of thought or technique...I am free to express my inspirations individually as I feel they should be expressed, not as they need to be expressed for commercial acceptance.  This is a freedom that I have chosen...one that I have sacrificed for, because in truth, my art is closest to my purpose.

I have relied on this separation to allow me to function in a practical world...one of material needs and obligations.  I have struggled for decades with the conflict between "selling out" and "practicality" and the ability to realize another lifelong dream...to create a family and sustain them.  But in that "struggle" I have also found the absolute freedom to maintain my artistic endeavors as pure entities...not bound by the need to please a public...not restricted to providing for the necessities of life…with no regard for the terms “good” or “bad.”

In truth, I have never adequately answered the question of whether I took the easy road or maintained the purity of my passion…that clarity may come as I progress…or it may not this time.

From a biographical perspective, I was a student at the George and Emily Lowe School of Art at Syracuse University between 1967 (and 1971).  My work is part of the permanent collection of the school, and I have won honors for some of my creations.  I have exhibited on a limited basis since, attracting honorable recognition for my work when I have been bold enough to share it.

I have found, as I have lived my life, that I return...always...to the thing that is closest to me...my inexorable involvement with art.  Good technician or bad, accepted or not, my road will always be defined by the transfer of my vision to medium...my best moments realized in that process.
