D. Lammie-Hanson's Bio
D. Lammie-Hanson is a self-taught artist who was born and raised in
Harlem, New York
. She exhibited talent at the tender age of 5. Her family was against art school due to the fact that she was to be raised strictly Catholic. She drew her talent from figures in the Stations of the Cross from church and the stories they told. As she matured so did her art where her inspiration was derived from psychological and emotional side of womanhood and her Black culture. She relies on strong primary colors of blues and reds to convey brilliance or simplicity with black/white.
Lammie’s first works as a professional artist were hand painted t-shirts in upstate New York which lead to two solo shows in
Albany
. Upon her return to
New York City
, she found alternative venues to exhibit her artwork instead of relying on the traditional gallery setting for new work. Eventually, she was invited to show her “Black on Black” series in a one person show at the Hamilton Landmark galleries in
Harlem
and at Villa Lewaro, the former home of Madame CJ Walker. One of her paintings was chosen to be a part of the “Coalition for the Homeless” Exhibit at the United Nations office at Geneva’s Palais des Nations in
Geneva,
. She has exhibited in a one person show in 2003 in Berlin at the Gallery 24.
