St. James School Reviews

My daughter just started St James Pre K Program and she loves it. She still has some adjusting to do but this is very normal since it is still a new environment for her. The teachers are amazing because they are patient with her and ask that we be patient with her as well. I have had my daughter in various schools paying $1300-$1800 a month for tuition and I have to say that St James out numbers all of these schools. There was even one school that mistreated my daughter and this was the school that I paid the most in tuiton. Every school has flaws and no one school is perfect but if you are looking for a school that is family oriented and you know your child will receive a good quality education then this is the school for your child.

When I first put my child at St. James, I was happy to find an affordable school near my place of employment. My child started at the school in Sept 2007 & is back this year only because all the other schools in the area are extremely expensive. I agree w/ the other parent who indicated they tend to label children too quickly. For 3 & 4 year olds they have to realize they are just children. When we were that age we were not required to know half the stuff these teachers claim our children should know. My siblings & I never attended 'school' before age 5...we didn't learn how to spell our name until we were in kindergarten & we turned out just fine (doctor, lawyer, & teacher) They need to make kids feel better about themselves regardless of what they know.

St. James unfortunately has failed to do everything it can to ensure that children feel safe from bullying, and misbehavior in the classrooms. My 10 year old started at St. James at the age of 6 1/2 (first grade) and was doing pretty well, when she reached the 2nd grade, she began to regress because of the teasing and bullying that was not addressed in the classroom appropriately. My daughter is now finishing the 5th grade and bullying is still an issue in the school, teachers do not effectively deal with the problem, the prinicipal tends to blame the 'victim' and does not address issues or give appropriate consequences, Ms. Rivera goes above and beyond to make children feel welcome, parents feel tended to, but she can often appear overwhelmed.

St james has improved greatly with the new principal. The office staff is amazing and will go the extra mile to ensure the happiness and safety of children. Ms. Rivera is the best! the lower grade teachers must improve the way they interact with parents; stop focusing on the petty things; stop labeling children; the principal is clearly the commander and chief and no teacher makes any move without her say so which makes it a bit difficult when trying to get feedback on your child; there is no immediate academic feedback, the tuition is affordable but the parents are hit with many expensive fund raisers; the school lacks a library, gym, outdoor space and no afterschool activities; homework is true busy work of no value and not age or grade appropriate. Seek other schools if able to.

I finally found a School that is afforable, but most of all I love the values and morals presented at St. James. The enviroment is very down to earth and not at all 'old school'.

My three year old attends the Pre K program at St. James and she loves it. She has really learned a lot. The Pre K program is a full day and combines 3 year old and 4 year olds. The school takes the children on trips such as the zoo, puppet shows and the Winnie the Pooh show. My daughter has learned how to say the days of the week in Spanish as well as English!

There is minimal homework, and the homework is not done even when assigned. The new principal (Mrs. Annemarie Mcgoldrick) is very strict, but she cannot undo years of turmoil in the short time she has been here. Although the higher grades are supposed to have 2 hours of homework each night, my son has only about 20 minutes. Some teachers encourage copying down the exact answer from the textbook, giving them A's when they do so. The few smart students who attend St. James find the work boring and can even degress within time, forgetting important concepts. At some point in their education, gifted students learn to be apathetic towards their schoolwork and not strive for a challenge.

Celebrating 150 years of service to the community of the Lower East Side of NYC. With that many years, they are definately doing something right!
