St. Joseph by the Sea High School Reviews

I am a freshman in SJS, and yes, it is truly challenging. However, that is it's appeal. I earned a seat in their honors program, though maintaining it is far more difficult. I am extremely proud to attend Sea, because I know how impressive it looks on one's transcript to not only have attended such a remarkable school, but graduated with honors with two foreign languages, Spanish and Latin, under one's belt.

St. Joseph By-The-Sea High School is, in my opinion one of the tops schools in the area. Is it hard? Yes. Is It challenging? Yes. Does it prepare the students for life? Yes. I am proud to send my son there and I am proud that my second son is likely going there as well. It is refreshing to see in today's world, a school that holds the students accountable for their performance, much like a boss will hold his/her staff accountable. Sea is a place where academics, spirituality and athletics coexist in seamless symbiosis. Well done Monsignor! You have prepared my son well and I count on the staff to prepare the rest of my boys as well.

i got kicked outta sea becasue my grades wernt up to their tanders and let my tell you ther high..........but its an amazing school and i miss it so much i whish beone wish i could go back i resent everyday im not their and that i wont be graduating high school with a sea diploma ....i made the greatest friends their and i achived somthings there that i never thought i could i love that school so0o00o0o much and yes its hard but i one of the best schoold on the island and if i had to redo my freshman and sofmore years over i would do them at sea and i would try harder this way i could graduate for sea............not only is it a good school the teachers are great and yes they dont baby you but tust me when i say its an amazing school

I am an alumnus of Sea and I think it is an amazing school. I was in the Honors program and there was a lot of work involved and at times it seemed ridiculous but now I realize that is was well worth it. Sea did a wonderful job of preparing me for college and I am so thankful to all of my teachers for doing such an excellent job. I received several college credits through Sea which were helpful in my college career. I think that I received the ultimate high school experience at Sea. It is a great place to be, the teachers are very helpful and there is a lot of school spirit. There are many clubs after school that are fun and easy to join. I think that I made the best decision going to Sea and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

i just graduated from Sea and it is a great school. it is tough but it prepares you for college since the teachers do not really baby you, even though it is high school. definitely the best choice on staten island

The school is terrible for kids! i am telling you know do not pick it . people who say their seniors and juniors that love the school only love the high school experience not the school the school is terrible and its too much stress and work for one kid idc if they prepare us for the future i can prepare myself for the future at any other school and still have an equal education KIDS DO NOT GO THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a few comments down a parents states that the school is to hard and how there is so much work. well i think its a good thing because sea teaches you about the future, if something is hard in life do you just quit at it and say no this isn't worth it and lower your standards? sometimes life doesnt even give you that option. i think sea is a great school and coming from public school i feel a lot has changed, but for the better.

I am an alumna of St. Joseph by the Sea and I find it very disturbing to read some of the negative reviews posted to this site, especially those written by parents. If your child complains the teachers think students 'don't have a life' they should be told that schoolwork is their life while in school. If he/she requires constant individual attention, perhaps a high-calibur private college-prep school is not appropriate. May I suggest a vocational school? Based on at least one of the student reviews posted to this site, I think they would fit in better there. Parents who coddle their children instead of encouraging them to strive for academic success are impeding their progress. Sea is a great school whose staff encourage diligence and individual responsibility. Those who cannot handle this no-nonsense approach to education should crawl back into their holes and not discourage others from attending. Love Sea!

Me being an honors student (with a scholarship) can tell you this school does not live up to desired expectations. There is an extreme lack of varied clubs, teachers are ignorant and days are tedious.

I have 2 children currently attending and I do like the school for the most part-however i sometimes feel that there is absolutley no leeway given at all to students. If a student wants to argue his grade for legitimate reasons-too bad-the teacher has the final word whether he/she is right or wrong. there is only peer tutoring which is okay but no help offered by teachers.I am not happy with the 'if you fail the first semester and dont bring up the average you are out in January'--i think as incoming freshman they need the time to acclimate to new surroundings and curriculums and the strictness of the school in general. I am on the fence about pulling one child out as the work load is too much for him, but then again Tottenville is hardly the asnwer......

I am currently at senior at Sea and I absolutley love it. I can not picture myself in any other school and I'm so glad that I chose Sea. It is tough academically, but I feel that I am very well prepared for college. The teachers are amazing and go out of their way to help anyone and everyone. The administration is pretty strict, but if you follow the rules you will do fine. The school is very welcoming, and I always feel like I can turn to anyone in the faculty or administration, if I need help with something whether it has to do with academics or not. Sea has amazing sports teams and the students are always supporting each other at the games.

My son is a junior and loves Sea. These school is great if you are very social. Those not so social might struggle. My son plays baseball, football, hockey & basketball. I guess it depends on your child if they will be happy in Sea. I honestly love it and feel my kids were safe and learning a lot here. The teachers are ok, but I dont think they are worth 550 a month! The extracurricular activities are superb, though. Overall I think Sea is a great after school activity place but only an OK academic school. It is also very safe

I am a parent of a freshman boy and his mother and I are also Alumni. I wouldn't want my child to have gone to any other school than St. Joe's.

I am currently attending sea and I just finished my first year. Many kids do not like the school because of the challenge. I think it is a great school because of the teachers. The school is safe and friendly and it has the most extracurricular activites on staten island, according to principal ansaldi. The teachers are always willing to help and the school is a great place to be because it has improved me spiritually, academically, and socially. The school is great and I look forward to attending it everyday.

Put me eldest daughter here, she fitted in perfectly and poeple herer were friendly. The teachers were great, and she didnt have any problems in any learning areas and when she did have, there was always someone to help her. We enjoyed but it was sad that we had to move, and she misses that school a lot.

I just graduated from sea last year (2004) and it really is a great school. I loved it there and I wish I could go back. It was the best four years of my life. To the friends I have from, the teachers and faculty and overall being a part of Sea was truelly remarkable. When I have children Sea will be my choice on where they should go to high school. It is a great environment both educationally and spiritually. I will never forget my time at this school. Your children will be better off attending Sea than any other school.

I am a student at saint joseph by the sea currently. I hate the school because the teachers think you don't have a life and they give you so much homework and i'm not just saying that. The school is too hard on us students. Too much homework to the point that i just can't take it.

I agree with the June '04 comment & would like to add that I thought my usually uncomplaining daughter was exaggerating when she told me of certain attitudes & expressions the staff used in front of students until I made unannounced trips to the school & witnessed for myself. If you don't show respect to someone, how do you teach it?

I would not recommend this school. The administration fails to give students individulaized attention and teachers tend to be judgemental and lack motivation. College preparation, in terms of AP course offerings and SAT preparation is virtually non existent. The athletics program is principal, and for a child not so athletically predisposed, they are invariably left behind. Students are typically 'of means' and ostracize those who are less fortunate. My daughter struggled through her years at Sea and I hope to spare other parents and children from the pain my family endured.

I have three children at SEA and after having sent them to public school for eight years I am very pleased with the quality of education they are receiving. In addition, I feel that they are in a safe and caring environment, something I didn't feel in public school. I feel this is especially important in high school.

This school is a great learning environment offering great education and lots of extracurriculars. Parent involvement is great.
