In the future, our generation will need to know Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and definitely Arabic. This does disappoint me, being forced to take languages I'm not at all interested in or already speak. The environment is very nice and the academics here are very rigorous. I was a straight A student before I reached the high school where I finally felt challenged in what I was learning. Attending this school really has prepared me to the future and what life is going to be outside the protected high school environment. The things most parents are concerned about are the people and crowding. For me as a girl, it is not really crowded. Because of the schedules they give you, the halls aren't crowded. The students there are like any other group of students. You have trouble makers, and you have the good kids. If you know your child already hangs out with the wrong group of kids, they are most likely going to be involved in some drama, if you have quiet kids, no one will bother them. The principal really cracked down on fights because now if you get into one, you are suspended for 2 weeks and cannot do any school activities for the rest of the year and have your prom taken away. People love to complain, but I love all my teachers, there are a lot of good extra-curriculars, class is challenging, and the staff goes out of their way to get an extremely diverse student body to treat eachother with respect and actually benefit from the diversity. A lot of my middle school friends were afraid of gangs, a low standard of education, and a nasty-looking school, so they went to private school instead. I seriously feel bad for them because, frankly, BHS is the exact opposite. All the students are genuinely nice and just great people. I know the school have prepared them for the colleges of their choosing, they gleefully work overtime at their extracurricula activities, which range from sport and music to theater and academic teams. The thoroughly enjoy the cultural diversity of the school so they will be comfortable in the diverse work world they will enter. Can the school system improve? Of course. Top 5% honor roll student involved in band, orchestra, key club. Her friends are the same. We have NEVER felt uncomfortable there regarding safety. There are bad apples at the most prestigious schools. Comments have been made about the change in diversity there. The world is diverse, I am glad that she has the opportunity to be there. Parents are involved, teachers try and we all know it takes the team of both to make it work. I also have a son, who is a sophomore and also is in the top of his class. I can't say enough about the teachers at BHS. They have gone above and beyond. Their dedication to our students should be commended. We hear so many negatives about this town and too many positives are ignored. Our academic teams have come in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in the county the last few years. Our key club just came in 1st place in the state and 3rd place in the world. Mr. Jennings, our principal, who is fairly new has brought wonderful leadership to this HS. The students have commented on the changes in one year that he has made. They are both in the top 5% of their respective classes and are having a great HS experience. The counselors and teachers have provided direction and support in all their academic and extracurricular endeavors, in addition to guidance towards their higher educational goals. Bloomfield has experienced a change in demographics that has not been welcomed by some of its residents. However this does not indicate that there is a crime wave or that the town's increased diversity indicates a lowering of academic achievement. The BHS Science wing is state of the art, as will be the rest of the school upon its completion. The staff is excellent and the students are engaged in learning. Most of these kids will go on to college. I attended Bloomfield High School and while it was rough around the edges then, it is nothing compared to it's state now. A constant police presence (not only in the High School, but the middle school, as well) is required just to keep the children somewhat safe, and even that isn't working. We've just moved out of Bloomfield mid-term so we don't need to subject our children to this any longer. The quality and range of academic programs is great. The extracurricular activities need to be brought to the students attention. The availability of these are unknow to the student unless they ask. It seems sports are pushed, while the arts are rarely mentioned. I feel that the school and the town is doing a tremedous amount of work to improve the environment of the school. The newly add-on Science Wing provides state-of-the-art facility for the students and the teachers to enjoy. BHS maintains high standards in its academics. I entered this school following my previous education in an inner-city school and boy oh boy there is a difference! Just because students come to BHS from previous inner city schools does not take away from the strong academia the school holds. I encourage everyone to take a look at the pie chart. Times have changed!
