There are challenging honors classes and even special education classes. Overall it is a good school except the guidance councilors, some of them are too lazy and seem unapproachable . But they hired a new counselor who helps children that are going through tough times in their lives. It is by far not a perfect school or at the level of BCA. However, it isn't as bad as some people say. The teachers here are wonderful and they do what they can to help you. They will stay after or before school until you understand the topic fully. I saw a review that said the music department was bad. Are you joking? This is the best music department in Bergen County (with the exception of the Bergen County Band). Mr. Dellosa does a great job at commanding the band to a high level. The athletics program is pretty good, also. P.S. To anyone who said that their child wasn't getting a high level of education, it's because you arent in any honors classes. The new principal and v.p are fantasic. Mr. Crowell was a wonderful man, but my new principal, Mr. Sabato, actually got to know me. He reached out to the kids and still with a strong backbone of rules he was fun. He let a spring pep rally occur and let the student government be in charge. He made sure that all students were involved and the pep rally was a success. The new pool, new track, new field, and plenty of new EXPERIENCED teachers are going to be a fantastic addition to the school and I'm actually sad to say that I'm not going to be able to experience it.” Posted By: student Quality Score: decline 2008-06-18 “All of you people dont have any idea what your talking about. This is one of the greatest schools to attend and if you think otherwise then I feel sorry for you. It doesnt matter what school you go to, it all matters on the student. The teachers and other staff members are courteous and somewhat well-educated. However, if your child attends this high school after being transfered from a New York school, he or she will be shocked to discover Lyndhurst's extremely low academic programs. Although this could be an advantage to receive high grades for your child, it would give false hope and security when it comes to attending college.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 3 2007-05-07 “I moved here from another town so that my child could get a better education. So far I am not pleased with this school at all. The school implemented that each child must do 20 hours of community service each year. What they consider there community services to be is a far cry from what community services are all about.I have called my childs counselor on several occasions and the counselor never knows what in the world is going on. The school is not that populated. I feel that some of the teachers are really not concerned with teaching the kids. Drama department is excellent. They take a swift approach to discipline. As with all NJ public schools; a parent has to push hard to get tutors - but they are available in the Honors Program. There isn't much additional when it comes to after school sports unless you're a football fanatic. Personally, I find Lyndhurst an unfriendly urban/suburban community. I was surprised at the high standards academically in most of the classes. The teachers are dedicated to their teaching and to the kids. However, if you ask the administration they would vehemently deny that statement. Their version of the school is far different from what it actually is. The students are below average, with a few exceptions that stand above the rest. Most students go on to two-year community colleges or nearby 4-yr colleges. Overall, the academic standards are often ignored in place of athletic priority; with the school in a town that devotes almost all of its budget to the police. The new science wing was well needed, and the staff are very dedicated to their work. The dicipline is excellent. The highest math course that can be elected is actually trigonometry, not Algebra, and there are 2 algebras, Algebra 1 and 2. This school is excellent, and yes, I do believe that the town does spend its money foolishy, there definitly needs to be a bigger budget for the school system, other than that, this school is excellent.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 2 2005-04-29 “My husband & I opted to take our 2 younger children out of this school and place them in private school. Our eldest graduated from here in 2001. Although we were never overly enthused with the school, we did not realize how poor the academics were until he started College. He was an honor roll student in LHS, but upon entering a local public university, he was woefully behind other students. I spoke with other parents who encountered the same problems. The district devotes more funds to the police force and the new developements in the town than to the education system. The new science wing is horribly and foolishly constructed, and is not functional at all. The education system is really bad. For example, their highest math class is algebra. I knew algebra in 8th grade! I was put there anyway. What a waste. Also, some kids take algebra in 2 years, algebra 1 A and algebra 1 B. What is that?
