Nishuane Elementary School Reviews

My daughter started at this school in the second grade coming from a private school, I thought that she would be prepared and on grade level. Unbeknowst to me that Nishaune was above grade level. As soon as her teacher identified the problem we were able to work together along with the school's remarkable STARS program to get her on track. Within 6 months my daughter was not only reading above her grade level, but her math skills have increased dramatically. Nishaune is a WONDERFUL school that is dedicated to the children and their learning and studying habits.

Extracurricular is beyond compare. My child has been well looked after, physically, mentally and emotionally. The school principal is responsive and the teachers are wonderful.

My grandaughter went to this school until she moved out of the community year before last. She still misses it. The faculty was extremely dedicated, creative, and focused on a common mission. It, and the population, were racially and ethnically very diverse, and the symbiosis was extremely positive and apparent. Parent participation was nearly 100%. This school could serve as a model for how to operate a successful school in an integrated community.

All three of my children are attending/have attended Nishuane School, the gifted and talented magnet, and I have found that it has been good fit for each of them. Despite large class sizes during some years, students receive a lot of attention due to the high number of classroom aides that are employed. The advanced 'CI' classes have allowed each of my children to explore their talents to a greater extent. The elective class selection book reads like a college course catalogue - pretty impressive for a school that services only K through 2nd grade.

I found 2 types of teachers there - very very good (exceptionally good!) and poor, notably poor. My child had both types. recommend checkin gthe teachers credentials first. The arts program and drama work is very very good! Every child is involved and loves it.

Overall, I've been very happy with my duaghter's experience at Nishuane. We transferred to the Montclair school district from elsewhere in her first grade year, and though she had trouble keeping up in the beginning, she moved from being a struggling reader to an advanced reader for her grade level as well as ranking in the 82nd percentile in math, which has never been her strong suit. This performance I credit largely to the STARS program which has been supportive and effective in getting her up to and beyond adequecy for her grade level. Nishuane also has a great diversity of arts programs and special course like foreign language instruction available at the elementary school level.

For my middle of the road, artistic, athletic daughter Nishuane was a great fit. For my painfully bright twin boys it has been a nightmare. The principal is wonderful, she worked with us in trying to find a better placement for the boys. Ultimately, the unorganized mess that is Nishuane, the high enrollment of so many little ones (K-2), is choas I am happy to leave behind. This is the poorest example of the Montclair magnet system. I was taken in by the 'great show' and the fact that 5 year olds do not have to mix with older children. I love being a class parent, it gave me a birds eye view of the reality of Nishuane. Please do not be taken in by their wonderful happy May Fair and Ice Cream socials, as I was.

My daughter attended Nishuane school and loved it. The teachers were great and very supportive and always informed me of any concerns with my daughter. There is tremendous parental involvement and be prepared for lots of fundraisers. Although it got costly (fundraisers) it is so worthwhile. I believe all the schools in Montclair are good and the town itself is a vey nice place to live. The only negative I can say about the school is parents who demand certain teachers and the lack of fairness.

I sent both of my kids here. They thrived both socially and academically, well known as the 'star' in the elementary galaxy of Montclair Magnets. With a dance studio, great elective courses for kids of all ages and the best performing & visual arts in the state. We could have easily chosen private, but with a 7th grader who scored 600 on her verbal S.A.T's how can you do better? The class sizes are smaller, sure it's a 'big' school, but it's full of 'little' kids, no 6th graders in the bathrooms or on the bus with your kindergartener. School hours also coincide with drop offs for nursery schools for younger siblings! Off to high school next year!

hello parents! this is Ava Mattaliano. I used to go to this school from pre-k to 2nd grade. now im in 7th grade. out of all three schools i have gone to, i would have to say that Nishuane was the best. i am not exsagurating, im serious, this school will give your kids the best experience of their lifetime. the plays that they put on are adorrable, i was in a peter pan play and i was the mother-dear. it was a blast. i made all of my freinds their and we are all still best freinds. the teachers are seriously the nicest people i have ever known, i had Ms.Flicher for a kindergarden teacher and she has inspierd me to be a kindergarden teacher, she made everything so fun and she was so loving and warming, still strict like a normal teacher should but she felt like a 2nd mother, or caretaker, she was the best. I learned most in her class. the school is awsomely awsome. the school also has awsome arts(singing, art, painting, drama) i learned alot about singing because my dream is to become a Country Singer or some kind of singer. it helped e soo terribly much. i love this school most. its so great.
