Tuscan Elementary School Reviews

This is an excellent grade school. The school has a very strong PTA program and the principal encourages parent involvment is class activities. I love this school. I have a 20 year who went to it and now I have a seven yr old who is now enrolled in this school. I am even more impress with the school, 13 years later.

My two sons are seven years apart in age. Tuscan maintained their high standards in the intervening years and has been just as great for my (now) 5th grader as it was for my 17 year-old. Amazing teachers, compassionate nurse, dedicated librarians, office staff like family, and excellent principal. Usually there is a weak link somewhere in the personnel chain, but I have yet to find it in the current group!

Our three children went through Tuscan, and we were very pleased with the education that they received, which was well enhanced by a dynamic parent community. Many of the teachers that our children had were excellent, some extraordinary. The children 'move up' from this school prepared to be active, curious, thoughtful individuals. The extracurriculars are strong, the annual school show (started years ago by parent Broadway performers), in which many children participate, is amazing.

I had four(4)children go thru Tuscan School. The teaching staff has always been excellent. Our youngest (a girl) is now in her Sr Year of College. She made honors at Columbia High, and Dean's list at Va. Tech. As parents, we were always hands on with all of our children. As a parent, you must be pro-active. You cannot expect the teachers to do all of the work. My daughter put it very well: 'You get out of the School System, what you put into it'. It's easy to see a child fail, and blame the system. It's harder to recognize that your child needs help, and then to ask for it. All 4 of our children have gone thru the complete system, and have done well in life. Our grandson goes there now, and is doing very well.

We just moved to Maplewood from Manhattan and can't say enough good things about it. The 5th grade teachers are very engaging, nurturing, creative and supportive and yet are very challenging and set high standards both academically and behaviorally. Our fifth grade boy is thriving and has never been happier or more interested in school. His grades have improved considerably because there are fewer behavioral problems in school. He even likes the cafeteria food! It's a wonderful school that prepares them very well for the tough middle school years ahead.

Thus far, I have been unimpressed by the educational experience my child has been receiving at Tuscan. The feedback from teachers and administrators has been inadequate on important topics such as attendance/lateness and measures of academic expectations. In short, the faculty at Tuscan does not opt to inform parents of unacceptable situations/performance before negative consequences occur. Since we are relatively new to this school system and had previously enjoyed a more productive and closer relationship with an academically superior school, it's possible that enough time has not passed for Tuscan to live up to i'ts vaunted reputation. Hopefully my present feelings will change for the better as the 05/06 school year progresses and I will be able to provide a more positive review.

I am pleased with the educational experience that my two boys have received at Tuscan. We have been lucky to have had great teachers who genuinely care about their students. However, like most schools these days, the 'specials' i.e. art and music need greater support. Also, while math and language are given great emphasis, I would like to see a little more attention paid to the sciences.
