West Orange High School Reviews

My son just finished his freshman year in all honors programs and it was a wonderful experience for him... will be entering sophomore year in honors and hates missing school.

This is the real world. Extremely diverse, full range of teachers, stimulating environment. Nothing is held back. No one is sheltered.

We just moved to West Orange and my 15 year-old daughter attends WOHS. School has a solid college prep curriculum, teachers that view themselves as true 'educators' and an overall awesome student population. School can appear to be a bit crowded but class size is still at a decent size with the average size core classes still way under 20 students. The high school campus consists of three buildings and the school has the best athletic fields in NJ.

Great school, diverse, great teachers, lots of opportunity... prepared me for real life

West Orange High School prepared me for an education at one of the nation's best ivy league schools. The opportunities offered in extracurricular activities and the high academic standards that the school required gave me all the tools I need to succeed in college.

WOHS has been a great experience for my son, who is now a junior. The ethnic, social, economic and religious diversity in the school is amazing, and all of us are enriched by this experience. The AP and Honors courses are excellent, and WOHS is above the state and national averages for the kids who take these courses. There are many, many extracurricular activities, clubs, sports and music programs to choose from. The West Orange instrumental music program is one of the best in the state of NJ. The administrators and staff and very caring people and the superintendent is very dedicated to our children. Like any school, there are always going to be issues, but for those parents who care enough to know what is going on in the schools and take the time to work with the staff, their children will have an excellent experience!

My daughter is a freshman. At this point we could not be happier about the school. She actually says she likes school. She is involved in some after school activities, is learning a great deal in her classes and finds most of the kids nice. There is a great camaraderie between different grades when they are in a sport or activity together. I also feel that the college bound info has been extensive and guidance counselors are very helpful and informative. I am looking forward to her next three and a half years at wohs.

As a recent graduate and a part-time sub at WOHS,I have seen a lot of changes in the school system. To my surprise the statistics show that WOHS is doing better than ever! Apparently our test scores continue to increase every year and the student population has become more diverse than ever, which must mean great cultural socialization amongst students. I don't think these ratings are truthful, not saying that there is a conspiracy in trying to give the school a better reputation. But when subbing I had three senior classes and a study hall. The seniors (not in special ed.) were unable to write a one page paragraph about a three page article. Only two students, the only ones that completed the assignment, said that they wanted to go to college. Study hall..no one showed up. As for diversity, there is no amalgamation-just cliques. BOE needs a reevaluation. ASAP

Great school because of it's diversity!! My daughter attends here and I am so glad she is in a real world situation already in high school. The amount of countries kids come from that attend this school is numerous... and an enriching aspect for anyone who attends.

West Orange high school is very educated and has wonderful programs, my daughter attended this school for her freshman class. Unfortunatly we had to move due to the gangs and the fights of balcks against hispanics. The people inside the high school are really generous. The only catch for that is that you must 'chill' with your own race. Even the deans in this particular school are racists. I as a parent liked the school my daughter attended to bt unfortunatly this happened and we moved to a better and safer place of the state.

I have no idea what this parent below me is talking about. If a student can't find an extra curricular activity, that is their fault. No offense intended. There is tons of music programs, sports programs, and unsupported clubs for interests. Teachers sometimes aren't the best, but that can be expected from any school.

Once a top rated New Jersey school, WO High has dramatically dropped in the quality of education that I expected for my children. I have been disappointed numerous times with the lack of care that the counseling and teaching staff has demonstrated. This includes a lack of communication regarding my child's academic progression to erroneous gradings on my child's final exams. It has taken my child almost to the junior year before finding something of interest in regard to extra curricular activities. In all, I have been frustrated and it is no wonder why most parents living in WO either move after the elementary level or send their kids to private schools. Not something you would expect from a town with such high tax demands!

Having two sons graduate from WOHS and one that will be in 6/04 I found the school very well suited for my children, two who were in advanceplacement & honor courses and the third in regular classes. There are many good teachers in the school. The new principal is great and I believe that with the staff we have at WOHS if parents put the effort in to be aware of what their children are doing and be active in their lives they will walk away with a great education from the West Orange schools. I also like the fact of the diversity. The children learn to accept one another for who they are not what religion or ethnic group they come from but for the person they are.
