Long Beach Senior High School Reviews

I am a senior at long beach high school and i have a 89 average. To start here Grading policy is terrible, there is at least 1 fight everyday, Classes are 27-30 students to a class room, the deans in the school are horrible they are to harsh on the little problems and not harsh enough on the bigger ones, the teachers are intolerable, stubborn and stuck up.These are not even half the problems. Over all terrible school. would advise you to send your child to a catholic school. May be more money but your child will get a better education somewhere else other then long beach high school

i would have to rate this school 4 stars. the last 6 generations of my family have all went there and i have 2 brothers and sisters that have graduated and my grandmother even taught there for over 20 years. i think the long beach high school is great and gets better and better each year! :) go bulldogs!!

I have to rate this school 4 stars. My one student graduated and is doing well in college, my other is a senior and is doing well academically. I have thoughts about the athletics. I believe that athletics are designed to aid one in working with others to achieve a goal. The goal is group or team success. I don't believe that the teams success should come at the expense of the indivual student. All varsity members should be mentioned in the newspaper when information about the entire team is written by the coach. It usually is not and that does much harm to the stuent not mentioned. When a varsity member is not mentioned, irrepairable harm can be don to their psyche. The coach should be smart enough to know that. or they shouldn't be a coach.

its a good school. yes there are problems but can you find a school where there isnt? im a junior there and there are soo many classes to offer.. there are even college courses and some classes you can take and they will count for college. To me i see LBHS as a very diverse school and everyone pretty much gets along with each other!

Current junior at the school, taking several AP classes. Quick rattle-off: Prinicipal's nice and does his job, but I never see his face much. Most of my teachers, for better or worse, really have taught me, though I can name a few personal qualms with teaching methods and commitment to students; mostly, though, on the up-and-up. Extracurricular is a non-issue; you've got every sport you could want (not my bag), and a good deal of academic/artistic clubs as well (ask about Model Congress; very enriching experience). I can't say I'm aware of total parental involvement, but as college preparations start, my family is in the loop. Discipline? Disastrous. Fights, strings of thefts; end-of-year prank season is a war-zone. Survivable, usually fine, but watch your neck. Overall, it's good. For all its downsides, I can say I'll leave here with enough fond memories to make it worth it all. -Class '08

There are many problems in this school. The administration and teachers in this school expect to hold the adolescents accountable, however, there is no accountability on their part. The guidance department is actually a social services department and the adolescents that act out most extreme are not punished. There have been many grading errors. Report cards, interim reports and notifications are not mailed on a timely basis. Signed...a parent whose child went to this school.

The school is good, except for the principal involvement. He in fact is very uninvolved. Overall, discipline is firm-children will learn their lesson here.

Teachers have a 'laissez-faire' attitude, not caring about students, genuinely caring only about getting paid. Parents not encouraged to get involved. Student gang members and wanna bes are becoming more predominant, posing a security and safety problem. Intimidation of average students leads to lower scholastic and SAT scores. District has become mediocre.

Long Beach High is a great school. There are so many extra-curricular ativities for the kids. Theres sports, drama, model congress and many other fun and educational clubs. Long Beach High has great teachers too!

my birth mom and my self went to this school and this is my sons last year there very proud that he is almost done that he went were his grandma and my self went keep up the great job thanks

I am a sophomore at Long Beach High School and i thing that this school is totally ignorant and disrespectful.I am a very good student and get 95's and up in honor's classes, yet, this school neglects my intellegence. over all this school is dissapointing and I am embarrassed to be in this school.

Im a Student At LBHS... its an interesting school... somethings should be changed. If your child needs motivation and, interaction in the classroom you came to the wrong place. Most of the teachers here have an old style of teaching as in boring lectures or using the overhead to show pictures that can be found in the text book all class, and never pick up a piece of chalk. Long Beach is a place for the well-known long beach families. If your family has lived here all their lives, went to high school here and your father was a lifeguard, you'll make it fine just because of who you are. Long Beach is a school for the self determined. But the Cafe will always be the place to be.

As a teacher in the district I can confidently state that most teachers try to do more than teach a subject. We try to teach the child. The problem is that with the exception of Mr. Restivo's willingness to do his best, the school is not handling discipline well at all. Children are falling through the cracks because there are no consequences or proactive actions taken. Many years ago this was not the case.

I'm surprised at how many parents who have already rated this school got it right. It's a great school for the motivated, for those that already have a honed self-discipline. But like others have said, it is not a good school for a kid that might fall through the cracks. I've seen it happen with my own brother who went through the special education system.

I agree, if your child is in the accelerated (self-motivated) or special ed programs, it's a great school. With the new leadership, more college level courses being introduced as well as recruitment of more minority involvement. It's about time!! But if your child is average and susceptible to negative peer and outside influences, very scary place to be. Most parents too busy or distracted to be on top of things. Been involved with the system over 12 years, seen many positive changes, from recruiting of new and enthusiastic teachers to better chaperoned trips and school activities, ie: Model Congress, Band trips. Has aquired state of the art equipment. Active PTSA.

I wish I had a better understanding of where this comment ['I have 4 children in this district and have dealt with many teachers. It is my experience the teachers exaggerate circumstances to prove their points....my advice is know your children. Do not trust the guidance counselors to do their job....' ]is coming from. In my short tenure as principal (since June, 2002), I have not found this to be the case nor have I heard anyone else espose this sentiment.

If your child is not having a problem, the school is fine. If your child falls behind or has any kind of emotional problem, well they fall between the cracks. There is nobody ready to handle a problem student. Who for whatever reason needs that special treatment. He or she will never recieve it there.they are not qualified to handle special children or young adults. they brag about the successful ones, you never hear of those lost kids what a shame. Like t.v. it's all about the ratings.

I believe that the new leadership in the school (principal and vice principals) is making Long Beach High School a great place to learn. The new principal, through his accessibility and involvement, is making a difference! School spirit has increased tremendously! The teachers are being held accountable now. The cutting situation is getting better because it is being addressed. Involved parents always have more motivated and successful students! There is a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students to choose from.

I have 4 children in this district and have dealt with many teachers. It is my experience the teachers exaggerate circumstances to prove their points....my advice is know your children. Do not trust the guidance counselors to do their job....

Terrific school now due to new Principal Nick Restivo.Great Music and Art departments. Math and Science are getting better with their new Chairman. Multitude of Athletic Teams. Low violence, and a great diversity of teachers both new and not-so-new. And, true it's a great school if your child is motivated, but that's the problem with most schools...the kids are not motivated!

Weak district programs for writing throughout the entire K-12 population. Weak math and science. Not enough college level courses in the HS. Not enough AP classes. Great music and arts depts though. It is a district that is okay as long as your child is self motivated.
