Benjamin N Cardozo High School Reviews

Good school. My son turns to be a smoker after studying there. No question about it. I'm amazed. That's kinda awesome.

This school has everything a parent or student could want in a NYC public school - excellent teachers and administrators, a committed and giving student body (city and state awards in science, math, debate, and #1 in 2008 for blood donation at a site!) and a focus on rigorous academics. Cardozo is a neighborhood school with THREE SPECIAL PROGRAMS - Dance, DaVinci (math & science) and Law. Instead of traveling all the way to another borough for a specialized school, a student can get an equivalent education at this Bayside/ Oakland Gardens school!

Amazing high school, with outstanding teachers. Students get the best education, and there's also so many clubs and events to go to. Also amazing programs such as the Davinci Program, Law program and dance

This school by far is a great school...Cardozo has great many activties, clubs and leadership preparing students for the real worl yea the school is over crowed ranking over 4ooo students but what can i say that is for many high school around the area. This school might have gotten bad in years past. I started bnc/dozo in sept 2005 and the school had a few bad kids that were no longer there my sophmore year and mr. Hallman is gradually bringing the school to a good condition 42nd street is still crowed but its still 42nd street the hallways got empty because no many students are going to thier classes. I am in my junior year and i know that cardozo is not a bad school. It is basically like any other school in nyc but above that. Many teacher care even if you dont and they also simpatize with you.

Good school helpful teachers

The academic programs are though great, however I feel they need more different required language classes. You can only get Spanish, or French and if you want another language class, you can only take it in senior year but you still need 4 years of Spanish or French. I would much appreciate taking Japanese and etc. instead of only a choice of Spanish or French and I feel many other students feel the same way.

I am a parent of a child that use to attend this school. The guidance and safety lacks. The school is grossly over populated and the school is full of gangs. Its a horrible school in general.

Being a parent of three children of this school, the administration definitely lacks communications between child and parent. The need to remove or transfer the AP of that school due to her attitude towards child and parent. She needs to be more proactive than reactive. Definitely unapproachable! The admin needs to be educated in 'people skills'. I am glad my one child has graduated and now I have two more to go. Being that school has started, after the first day, they have already complained about the teachers and guidance consular who have no lack of sense for the safety of our kids in this school!! Shame on her and the principal!! Why put kids in a potentially dangerous situation? That makes me thinks who are watching and educating our kids??

This is a wonderful high school. The academics is superb and the dance program will prepare to become a professional.

The school is grossly overcrowded. If your child is a structured, disciplined individual they will succeed.

Cardozo High School is by far the best non-specialized public high school in New York City. Its Math & Science curriculum is second to none and does an exceptional job preparing high school students for a rigorous college academic program.

great physical education program and extra-curricular sports. Phys. Ed classes include fencing, yoga, weight training and a Dance program.

My daughter graduated from Cardozo in 2001 and is now coming up for college graduation this May from Baruch College. Because of the excellent education she received throughout her public school education experience, she has excelled in every course in college. The professors were especially impressed with her written and verbal skills as she was enrolled in honors English and literature classes in Cardozo. Thank you for allowing my daughter to shine in college!

My son is in his sophomore year here. Although we were initially concerned about the crowding and size of the school, he has had a great experience here. He came in as a top student and remains a top student. The math research competition through the Davinci Math program was a great experience. He got 100 on the bio regents, which is a credit to the teaching at this school, beating his friends at Stuyvesant and Bronx Science!

The academic programs available are very good, however I don't think the staff/counselor involvement is sufficient. This school is extremely competitive academically and I feel as if the children that need a bit more attention are lost.

Benjamin Cardozo is a very good school. Its a variety of all cultures. Teachers are very good. The principal is very much involved. Rules are encouraged. A friendly and Safe enviornment for your child!

Teachers are very involved in student's accademics. Excellent school security. Parents are involved but could involve themselves more.

I think this school is extremely overrated. They say that is the best school in New York City but I doubt it. My child has been severely injured by her fellow students. She has told me there are fights everyday, extremely overcrowded classrooms.

As a graduate of the class of 2003, I can honestly say that I received a very good education at Cardozo. However the funding has been cut enormously to the school, and that will bring it down. The overcrowding has only gotten worse with the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act. Into the first marking period of the Fall 2004 semester, equalization is still not complete. Many of the best teachers are being lured away by the promise of a chance to teach a class of 25 students and get paid a decent wage on the Island. Its ashame that budget must change the excellence of a school. As a sophomore in one of the top rated universities in the nation, I can say that i was prepared for the real world, socially, academically, and mentally. Cardozo is a great school and i would hate to see it fail.

I think the school is overcrowded. I think the principal and the guidance staff especially the assistant principal of guidance are pushing the school down. The school was much better organized when my older children attended with a different administration. I'm glad my kid is a senior.

One of the best New York City academic-athletic public high schools. Students annually earn scholarships to top colleges and universities ranked in U.S. News & World Report while achieving success in PSAL team sports.

As a 2003 grad with full honors, the superior quality of education and excellent staff distinguishes Cardozo from all others, making it one of the best high schools in the country, and the world. My 4-yr education at Cardozo has proved to be invaluable to me at Cornell (the best ivy around!). The memorable moments I've collected, great friendships I've formed, and invaluable lessons I've learned, made those 4 years the best years ever. I would not have gone back and changed a single thing. Cardozo offers a rigorous curriculum, including all those AP classes (other schools, including STUY, do not offer as much or allow enough students to take them). A Dozo education outweighs the problem of over-crowdedness, or any other perceived inadequacies. The student body was diverse and interesting, as can be said for the staff. To all my 2003 fellow graduates, we rock!

I have two children. One graduated from Cardozo in 2001. I have one who is a senior at Cardozo. He is taking advantage of the AP classes and will start college with 12 credits. He is in the DaVinci program which is a math and science program which the colleges look at as higher than honors classes. The one that graduated in 2001 didn't take advantage of the AP classes but Cardozo prepared her well for college. She is now a junior in college and is thinking about law school. Overall I feel Cardozo is a top quality HS and the principal is an excellent leader.

As a soon to be senior at Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, let me just say one thing...it is an excellent school to attend if you are prepared to being on your own. As a student at this over-crowded high school, the teacher to student ratio is immensely large. A student at Cardozo has to compete for individual attention from teachers, and well, if you aren't a good student chances are your teacher won't know unless you tell them. Now dont get me wrong, you can inquire tutoring but I feel as a student, it should not have to be inquired, a teacher should demand that a student attend tutoring, a teacher should make calls to the parents, and be able to have a conference among the student, parent, and teacher. A parent/student should not have to be the only one concerned about his/her grade, and I have found that happening a lot, in Cardozo. If you are a focused individual your grades will excell here at Cardozo, I mean I was a pretty okay student and my GPA was a 3.0. That is a 3.0 for a pretty much average student!!! Cardozo has EXCELLENT Extra-Curricular Activities, Bar-none. Here at Cardozo, we try to include everyone in every school activity, regardless of race, age, sex, etc. In conclusion, if you are prepared to be on your own, Cardozo is the High School for you.

I graduated in June 2003 and I miss it there aready. Most of the teachers are really good. They are fair and the work load is just right. There are plenty of AP classes to take if students want to challenge themselves and plenty of ways to get involved. The rules aren't too strict but they are enought to keep everyone in line. There is a good mix of ethnic groups and these groups rarely clash. I wish everyone could get the chance to go to a high school like Cardozo.

2nd time I did this. My daughter graduated from Cardozo High School this June. We were very pleased with the school, considering that the school was very overcrowded, the staff did not leave a stone unturned. From the very first 10th grade orientation to the college office helping students fill out and send college aplications they were on top of everything. My daughter had a good high school expeirence. She was in the resource program and there was no problem too big or too small that we were not helped with. Mr Rick Hallman runs a great school. He is a good pricipal and leader. I'm sure he will continue to help educate our students. Sincerely, Susan Merrill

This school is known for being 'the best neighborhooding high school in NYS'. Now I'm sure that you've heard of the list of achievements and awards that Cardozo receieves as well as the long list of extra requirements us students had to take in order to graduate (I graduated in June 2003) such as an extra math class, science class, senior thesis report and many others. What they don't tell you however, is how over crowded this school is. It's so overcrowded that they added 4 new trailers two years ago (totaling up to 8 trailers altogether) and overcrowded classrooms and hallways. Now please keep in mind that most HS in NYC are overcrowded as well. The fights in Cardozo are minimal, however they do exsist as in every HS in NYC. The good teachers in Cardozo are really good and the bad teachers in Cardozo are really bad, such as most schools. However, Cardozo has many clubs and things for students to be involved in. I must say that Cardozo pushes their students to their limits and gives them a lot of extra work that other schools do not have. This is actually good for preparation for college. Cardozo also has a wide range of AP classes (which is very hard to get into and survive) but the rewards prove themseleves in the end, trust me. Overall, Cardozo gave me a good HS experience and pushed me to do more than many of my friends from other schools do. It's a really good school with a really good reputation, but it comes along with flaws as many other NYC public schools do. I recommend this school as I have yet to regret my descion on picking this HS to attend.

I'm just surprised that Benjamin N. Cardozo isn't a 'science' school. The students at Cardozo are just as intelligent as the students at the top school in the state, stuyvesant. The teachers are excellent, and the school staff is always there for you.
