P.S. 97 Reviews

I tranfer my kids to 97 from 121 my biggest mistake. the pre-k program is not what pre-k should be. All my child does is arts and crafts. Craft that he force to do. Pre-k should be about choices. My child is not given chioces.

P.S. 97 was..a great school! Until that horrible principal Bornkamp came. She needs to be removed. She has no respect for parents, no compassion or interest to the education of our children and is single handedly dragging P.S 97 into the dirt. The dedicated teachers and staff, who deserve better treatment from a so called 'leader' have had to endure her power trip, which she believes she is superior, and has to answer to no one. Frankly, as a parent I am sick of her. My child has expressed to me how unhappy everyone is since she's been principal. Even how children have overheard her make ethnic remarks and speak badly about parents. Its a shame this is an example of leadership we are giving our children. Most of all, a disgrace that with her behavior, concerns & complaints from parents have went unnoticed!

PS 97 was highly recommended to me from when we transfered from PS182 10 years ago now my other children go here ( 2 boys ) when Mrs. Spears was here best of the best but now my feeling have changed, not so much for the teachers, staff or others members but for Mrs Bornkamp , she can be cold , unresponsive , and not up to being to attendtive to parents or teachers I might add. Here at 97 we try to work together and being understanding but I feel that Mrs Bornkamp needs to start to open up her ears and paying attendtion to what everyone has to say ( staff , teachers , parents , everyone who has a voice ) This school should not good down because Mrs Bornkamp 'This is my school and I'll do what feel like ' the school belongs to the children and the community

Ps 97 is a good school, the teachers care about the students and so does the parent coordinator. The children do well in this school and the staff is caring but there is one major problem, that is the principal. The principal states that she cares, she doesnt care about anything but herself. I am one of many parents that is in agreement that she should be removed. The Bd. of Ed. should look into all of the complaints filed against her and they will see the displeasure that the parents have regarding this principal, take action soon before it gets worse!

This school is ok as far as NYC elementary schools go. The quality of education really depends are who the teacher is. I question the dedication of [my daughter's] teacher. She seems to be one of those teachers who's frustrated with her job. The communication is also lacking. Several times I had to confront the teacher to see why information wasn't communicated to me. I found out the information from the Bd. of Education website. Also the resources are limited. they have a 'mulitpurpose' room that they use for everything. The second graders don't even have gym. If you put your child here, make sure to stay on top of their education and give them plenty of tutoring.

both of my kids attended this school as well as my husband and sister-in-laws. my son graduated in 2001 and my daughter is going to graduate this year. I love this school and the teacher's as well as the maintance workers and security workers. This School has turned out to be a tradition in my family. I only wish it went up to the 8th grade

I have 2 children in PS 97 and an older one that has graduated. I am grateful that my children have attended PS 97. I have always been an involved working parent. PS 97 is a good school where children excel. It has a warm atmosphere and all of the staff are always available if needed. There have been many great changes in the past few years and the school is only getting better which is why parents fight to get their children in if they are not in the zone. I am always informed of what is going on and am greeted every morning by school safety, principal, asst. principal and the parent coordinator. I am glad to see them outside watching the children since in the past that did not happen. It is a much warmer and inviting school. Thank you!

When my son was in the 1st grade last year, I thought the school was wonderful. His teacher was great. The principal was very attentive. This year however, (my son now in 2nd, and a daughter in Pre-K) was different. We got a new principal Mrs. Bornkamp, and my level of disgust has grown. With the lack of a proper gym, my son almost never got to have gym class during the winter because the 'multipurpose' room that was also used as an 'auditorium', was being used to hold the students after lunch. And they wonder why the kids are not focusing or antsy? They are bored. These kids are not getting a well rounded, balanced curriculum.

my daughter attends ps 97 in the special ed program and it is wonderful. the teachers are great the staff is very hands on with the students and families. i dont like the parent cordinator, she not very parent friendly. you dont see her in the morning or in the afternoon ever talking to the parents. the new principal is very cold towards parents not friendly. other than that the school is wonderful down to janitors, security guards. i wish my daughter could stay there until 8th grade.

P.S. 97 is an excellent school and has great leadership. Its teachers are both professional and dedicated. P.S. 97 is family oriented. From the administration down to the kitchen and custodail staff, it is a wonderful place to be. Its teachers and staff are dedicated to the children. It provides a very welcome environment to all who enter the building.
