P.S. 116 Mary Lindley Murray School Reviews

this has been my school for the past six years and i love it!! All of my teachers are very kind and i love to go to school.

My daughter is in 4th grade and I have had some issues during her course at the school. My daughter s experience with teachers was not very positive. During kindergarten, the teacher left in the middle of the year and was replaced by a brand new teacher who did not have experience teaching on her own. She did not have good control of the class. Also the assistant teacher s were always quitting and we have several during the year and many days without an assistant for 24 kindergarteners.

I have (3) children, all of whom have attended PS 116. My oldest daughter has since gone on to middle school, and my son and youngest daughter are in the first and third grades. This school has proven its self to be dependable, nurturing, and highly attuned to the needs of their students. My children thrive in this community, and there is never a day that they do not want to attend school. The teachers and administrative staff are highly capable and prove themselves time and time again. And in the few instances that my children or I have had an educational issue that needed addressing our voices were heard, and the matter dealt with in the most courteous and sincerest of ways. I love this school, and anyone would be hard pressed to find a NYC public school better than this one.

I have yet to meet a teacher who I would not want my child to have, and the specialty teachers are equally as good.

I would ordinarily rate this school as a 5 but here are the items they could work on to become the top shelf school I hoped they would have been: Until the 4th grade, there was not nearly the emphasis on standardized tests as I would have hoped for. The 4th grade teachers are excellent and are the exceptions to the rule. Most of the teachers do not focus on exceptional talent that I was used to growing up in public schools. Top talent and ability draw attention, and most teachers do not emphasis academic success and effort required in a competitive work place. We are asked to donate what seem to be on a weekly basis.

The Prinicpal of PS 116 is dedicated to improving an already excellent school program by getting parents involved at home and through after school programs.

P.S.116 comments. The quality of school is pretty good and programs are knowledgeable. There s a lot of after school programs like Music, Art & Crafts, Sports, Homework, Magic, Chess, Music, Swimming, YMCA and much more. What Events are there? The Activities are nice especially for Halloween that my kid loves the most. You even get a haunted house. P.S. 116 are much funded to make a good school for your kids! For 5th graders there are a lot of field trips and in 5th Grade you even get one to PEEC (Pocono Environmental Educational Center). PEEC is even an overnight trip, it s like camping. We even got a fun party the day of graduation. How do I know this? This is because my kid was once at that school. My kid went from kindergarten to 5th grade and he changed a lot from that school. If you plan to sign up I hope you enjoy the school! Visit http://www.ps116.org/home.aspx

We were initially apprehensive about 116 because we had seriously considered private school (due to the negative image of the NYC public school system). What we found was a school that went well beyond our expecations. The key to any school is the teaching staff and 116 has a dedicated group of talented teachers. My first grader is already reading at a 3rd grade level. She is writing stories every week. The facilities are not up to private school standards but that's okay because the money we save on private school can pay for college. I give the school an A+ on academics and a B on facilities.

PS116 is a wonderful school with a tremendous staff, the principal is excellent, she is tough but very well received and 'very approachable'. I am thrilled at the quality of education, my kindergartner is reading and writing above his grade level. The academic curriculum is so rich and diverse. I really can't express with words how satisfied I am with PS116 and its amazing staff that makes everyday happen. A+

My son is in first grade and we are so lucky to be a part of the PS 116 family! The teachers, PTA and Administration are all amazing. Children are offered music, art, chess, dance, PE, computers, and science. I feel the Administration is approachable and open to answer questions and comments.

My daughter is in third grade and each year the teachers out do the one before! We have been tremendously happy here as ps116. The extra effort that the teachers putinto each and every moment of the day are evident in the growth of the children who attend this great place. Children are offered music, art, chess, dance, PE, computers, and science!

I agree with the previuos parents review of the Principal at PS 116...she is not approachable...she always seems to have something more important to do...

Overall this school is pretty good, though I do have some issues. We decided to keep my daughter in this school where she will be starting second grade. Kindergarten was a mess. Their teacher, who wan't very good becasue she had vitually no control of the kids, left in the middle of the school year and on top of that the assistant teachers (who the parents pay for)kept changing every month. The classroom laso seemed to harbor very unruly kids. It was not a stable environment and the school administration was too slow to react. Finally they replaced her with a brand new teacher with lack of experience. That did work out well at the end. I also have some issues with teh administration. I feel that they are not very approachable and can be rude at times.

We found ourselves at PS 116 quite by accident, and have been thrilled by the quality of the school. My son is just finishing first grade, and has loved every minute of his time there. There is a great mix of students and a very involved PTA. It is a warm and welcoming environment. Couldn't recommend it more highly.

My daughter is in first grade and loves the school. We travel an hour to school and it is well worth it. The teachers are great and caring. They start chess in kindergarden and they have a great variety of afterschool programs. She has been playing the violin in the school for strings program. I looked at well over 20 schools and haven't second guessed my choice. We are both happy.

quality staff. Excellent programs. Nurturing. Wonderful afterschool programs. Chess, Music, art

The school's TAG program was disappointing. I didn't feel that my child was challenged any more than she would have been in a regular school program.

While the conventional wisdom is that the better teachers are reserved for the non-tag classes, in reality all the A and nearly all the B students are in TAG. This means that there's no way a B student who doesn't make it into TAG is going to get anywhere near the quality education that this school is noted for. The PTA is notable for its inability to tolerate dissenting voices.

Both my kids attend this school. The school has great music and afterschool programs. My children started learning cello in kindergarten and have enjoyed this program very much. The school also teaches chess afterschool as well as in its regular curriculum. The teachers are all very caring and focuses on the individual strengths and weakesses of the children. The principal is very hands on and always looking for ways to add richness to our school. The afterschool program includes swimming as well as science, sports and dance among many other activities. The parents are very supportive as well as the school staff. I believe the education speaks for itself based on the school's test results.

The school has wonderful afterschool programs such as music and chess. The reading and math programs are excellent as well as the staff and teachers.

Excellent Chess program. The school looks like a little old, but over all it meets my expectation.

Our daughter is in kindergarden and we are very happy with the school. Our daughter is enjoying chess, reading and an assortment of extras like computer, dance, art etc. The teachers are very dedicated and all seem to be on the same page. In other words there is a true continuity across the grade.
