World Journalism Preparatory Reviews

This school gives a lot of work and is very academically oriented. The teachers work with the students and information is distributed via email and sent home with your child. Parents and students can view the assignments, grades, and attendance on a system called TeacherEase which is quite helpful. I am very happy that my child chose this high school.

I am dissapointed with WJPS...they do not prepare the kids for the state wide tests...no leadrship and or accountability from top down...very dissapointing...my child is leaving that school...

My daughter has attended this school from day one and she is doing extremely well. She takes responsiblility for her work and receives projects that require not just research but she has to think. The teachers are very supportive and through Teacherease get back to you. As with any new school there are growing pains but, the goal is for EVERY student to get into college. This is a college board school and going here will give your child a leg up. The school is small and therefore, the principal and the AP's know each student by name. Yes, there is an emphasis on writing. Yes, they don't have textbooks for every class. What they do in the classroom is far superior to any other school in the neighborhood.

teachers are ontop of students with everything that goes on. no nonsense is taken. the teachers are strictly there for the students well being. Teachers are always around to offer help to any students whether they have them in a class or not. My daughter has been going to this school for two years now and couldnt be doing better. Not only is she doing better in school but she finally understands the material and challenges her self without being pushed to do anything. Responsibility is taught immediatly in this school through teacherease, emails, advisory, etc. Within the first year of this school your child will immediatly understand the importance of education and appreciate it more and more everyday. My daughter on her own, wants to do homework and do well in all of her classes. T

This school is wonderful. Grading is determined by overall performance rather than mainly (or solely) by test scores. As a former homeschooling parent who wanted a more real-life experience for her child, I have to say the method of teaching and grading in this school is wonderfully refreshing. It's not for everyone though, as many parents seem to feel constant testing - and basing a child's learning ability on test scores - is what's most important. The teachers in this school know better. I highly recommend it.

this school gives work that is not appropriate for the grade level, whether it's too hard or extremely easy. Students are forced to take tests that are not mandatory for any other school. The principal is also very unorganized and rarely ever has time to help with students

Very disruptive school; discipline is lacking. If you intend to send your child to a different high school you should get them out of WJPS. There are hardly any test given, if you want to go on to a different high school where they actually have books, tests, etc, you might have a hard time adjusting.

My child is new to WJPS and already showing progress. This is an excellent school, but it is not for everyone. They are unique, innovative, and very well organized. My advice to parents is 'do your research' (just as you would for a high school or higher education). It is true, emphasis is on classroom work, participation, responsibility for note taking, project and presentation, not test scores or text books. The processes are centered around 'thought provoking and reflection and being a responsible citizen - in your class, group and community.' An Advisory period provides time for a multitude of small group innovation and creative thinking. Writing is an essential ingredient in constant but appropriate doses, as is reading. This is a college board school (AP classes) with an attached high school (6-12), with innovative, skilled staffing and leadership. A 'gem' for Queens. (uniform school)

My daughter attended this school last year and is entering 7th grade and I believe that the school is still in the developmental stages. They are required to create journals, class participation and projects for their grades which is great but less % of credit is given for test scores. This is can be a very subjective way to grade a student. It is a college bound school, however there does not seem to be a focus on assisting students who may want to attend the specialized H.S and not continue there in the H.S. I guess we will see what happens this year with 7th in terms of testing and grades. As far as organization, the teacherease is excellent is keeping track of the students grades and projects.
